Now, who doesn’t love soft serve ice cream?! It takes me back to my childhood of hearing that creepy tune play out from the Mr Wippy icecream van and running out to get your 99 flake with red sauce. Sunday Folks in Holland Village takes this to the next level by incorporating interesting flavour combinations into freshly churned soft serve ice cream.
As the name would suggest, Sunday Folks is the perfect place to come to on a Sunday when the sun is shining and you need your ice cream fix. The decor is on point with lots of copper everywhere and a nice minimal design.
We only had water when we visited, but they serve good quality coffee for you caffeine junkies out there.
So Sunday Folks’ thing is desserts. They have handcrafted sweets which make a perfect gift. They also have a great selection of cakes. But we were there for the main event – their soft serve ice cream, which they pump out of the wall – something akin to beer pumps in a brewery. You can either have the ice cream served in a cone to take away or a waffle to eat in.
The favours we tried from left to right were roasted Italian pistachio served with roasted nuts and almond biscotti, milk chocolate hazelnut with praline, and dark chocolate Ferrero served with caramel marshmallows. All are $10 for one waffle with a single serving of ice cream. By far the best flavour was the roasted pistachio that had a wonderful deep nutty flavour that wasn’t too overpowering. Coming in in second place was the dark chocolate Ferrero which sounds like it would be too intense with chocolate, but because it’s made with 55% chocolate couverture it’s a more grown-up bitter chocolate flavour. Paul said it was the best chocolate ice cream he has had with the perfect balance of sweetness. The waffle has a nice crisp outer with a light soft and fluffy interior, which is dangerous as you could definitely have two to yourself with no problem.
Sunday Folks know a thing or two about desserts – next time you’re in the Holland Village area save room for dessert and head down here. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
