Yucheng Road, Zuoying District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan 804 | map | website | opening 5pm-1am, closed Mon and Wed |

Kaohsiung is in the South of Taiwan and has a great art scene. There are lots of independent shops and cafes. Their most famous night market is Ruifeng and this was our first taste of a Taiwanese night market; we weren’t disappointed. Check out the other places we visited in Taiwan.

THE VIBE

The hustle and bustle of a night market really makes you feel part of the action. I loved squeezing through the walkways to see what surprises the next store had for us. Ruifeng Night Market has many food stalls and still retained a local charm.

ALL THE FOOD

Top priority was Taiwan’s famous chicken cutlet and the place to get them at Ruifeng night market is Angel. They fry their cutlet in some damn crispy batter. However, the star of the show is the chicken which is super juicy and marinated to perfection. It has a sweet soy favour and is really delicious, by far the best thing I ate in Taiwan. Bear in mind this thing is MASSIVE so I recommend sharing one if you want to have a chance at eating anything else at the market.

We saw people walking around with these huge spiral potato sticks and went on a hunt to find them. They made them using a machine that peels a potato into a spiral and skewers them on a stick to deep fry. You can choose many different toppings such as curry, mustard, pepper, we went for cheese. Best way to eat potatoes on the go!

A Taiwanese classic is a sausage in a sausage of rice, sounds crazy but actually works!

We were so full that we couldn’t try the sweet potato stall, but they are meant to be fantastic!

For dessert, your best bet is ice cream, they roll it in front of you on a cold plate.

Taiwan’s night markets are an awesome way to try lots of local foods on the cheep. When in Kaohsiung Ruifeng Night Market is the place to be and you cannot leave without trying the Angel chicken cutlet – outstanding!
